Google Cloud Unit to Lay Off Employees This Week
Google laid off an unspecified number of sales staff at its cloud computing unit this week, according to people with knowledge of the matter. Despite strong quarterly results that showed accelerating revenue growth at the closely watched business unit, Google LLC is said to have fired approximately a hundred employees in its Cloud unit, Business Insider reported on Friday, citing an internal document and sources.
Earlier this month, the tech giant sacked at least 200 employees from its Core unit as part of a strategic reorganization aimed at global expansion. According to an employee familiar with the matter, the reported layoffs occurred within Cloud’s “Go To Market” group in the Asia-Pacific region and affected teams dedicated to consulting, partner engineering, and sustainability.
“We maintain our commitment to investing in areas that are critical to our business and ensure our long-term success,” the company told Business Insider in a statement.
While these layoffs indicate a tightening in some areas, Google is aggressively hiring for its Cloud vertical in countries like India (Bangalore), Mexico (Mexico City), and Ireland (Dublin). The company plans to add around 1,500 new employees to its Cloud division in these regions. This dual approach highlights Google’s strategy of optimizing its workforce in certain areas while expanding its global reach and capabilities in others.
